  1. Chain of about 50 small islands stretching
  2. from the NE of Hokkaido, Japan, to the S of
  3. Kamchatka, USSR; area 14,765 sq km/5,700 sq
  4. mi; population (1970) 15,000. Some of them
  5. are of volcanic origin. Two of the Kurils are
  6. claimed by both Japan and the USSR. The
  7. Kurils were discovered 1634 by a Russian
  8. navigator and were settled by Russians. Japan
  9. seized them 1875-1945, when under the Yalta
  10. agreement they were returned to the USSR.
  11. Japan still claims the southernmost (Etorou
  12. and Kunashiri), and also the nearby small
  13. islands of Habomai and Shikotan (not part of
  14. the Kurils). The USSR agreed to the latter
  15. 1972, but the question of Etorofu and
  16. Kunashiri prevents signature of a
  17. Japan-Soviet peace treaty.
